World records are usually great feats... but it was a great seat which saw a new international best set at Blackpool Tower.
The world record attempt for the most balloons burst by sitting was officially smashed by Radio Wave presenter Ged Mills at the resort attraction yesterday morning.
Ged’s 27 in 30 seconds beat previous record holder, former England cricket star Freddie Flintoff, who managed 25 two years ago during a charity telethon.
Speaking after the successful attempt, Ged said he was “elated” with his new status.
Describing his technique, he said: “It was literally up, down, up, down.
“There was a lot of squatting going on.”
The event was stringently overseen by a Guinness Book of Records official and two people were allowed to feed the balloons in from either side of the chair.
“It was incredible because we’d practised it before and we hadn’t really got there so everyone was elated to get it,” said Ged.
“We were confident but not overconfident, I thought if we got the right balloons we could do it.”
Ged and fellow colleague Hayley Kay have been living in the Tower since Monday and have currently raised £5,600 in aid of Chloe New, a 10-year-old sufferer of cerebral palsy from Fleetwood.
