A POPULAR St Annes restaurant has closed its doors.

Mamma’s Too, in St Andrews Road South, did not open for business earlier this week and has remained in darkness ever since.

Calls to the restaurant have gone unanswered.

The eaterie was hit with a £1,400 fine after inspectors found out-of-date and mouldy food in April last year.

Owner Giovanni Tiribocchi had received verbal and written warnings previously about management of stock and Fylde Council officials said he had failed to act.

But Arnold Sumner of St Annes Chamber of Trade said he thought the business had managed to turn itself around.

He added: “They’d got around their problems and business appeared to be building up again quite nicely.

“All that we’ve managed to pick up is that it is closed and they’re obviously not serving any more. The owner has been away. It’s a real shame.”

Clive Holland, managing director of Blackpool-based dining group Sugarvine, said he had been told the premises had closed.

He added: “We’ve been dealing with them over the years but were told this week it has ceased trading.

“It’s a real shame. We’ve noticed nationwide a lot of restaurants and venues closing in the past two months - it’s been carnage out there.

“People are keeping their money close after Christmas if they’ve had a bad time of it and that’s making it more difficult for restaurants.”

A spokesman for Mamma’s restaurant in Blackpool – once part of the same business – said the St Annes restaurant had closed.

He said the Topping Street venue was busier than ever and remained fully open.
