Advice on how to tackle rogue bars

DESPITE dire warnings surrounding the new longer opening hours, councils say they now have more power than ever to deal with badly-behaved boozers.

Fylde Council is backing a three-point plan which spells out how residents can call for a review of a pub's licence and make the most of new powers given to local authority's to crack down on irresponsible landlords.

Coun Dawn Prestwich, chairwoman of Fylde's licensing committee, said: "In Fylde we have 242 licensed premises selling alcohol and 130 of those have been approved for later hours.

"The majority of people drink and act in a responsible way, but these new powers will allow us to crack down on the binge drinking culture that causes anti-social behaviour.

"If people are experiencing difficulties, the council is here to help.

"We will continue to work with business, licensees and residents to ensure the new licensing laws don't have a detrimental effect on community life in Fylde."

If residents are concerned about nuisance venues they are first encouraged to try to talk it over with staff at the pub itself. But, if this fails, they should follow the three-point plan launched by the Local Government Association.

Firstly, they should contact the licensing team at the council's Consumer Well-being and Protection Unit and their ward councillor.

Next, they are encouraged to keep a diary detailing rowdy behaviour and contact the police about any serious incidents.

They should then be prepared to present their evidence and views to the council's licensing committee.

Anyone with any concerns over nuisance establishments can contact the licensing team's Consumer Well-being and Protection Unit at St Annes Town Hall.

Alternatively telephone on (01253) 658658, by fax on (01253) 713113 or by e-mail at licensing@fylde.gov.uk.
