A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a suspicious fire broke out in a Stalmine home.

The 26-year-old, of Cleveleys, was arrested on suspicion of arson - recklessly endangering life, and is currently being quizzed by detectives in police custody.

Officers were called by the fire service at 9.15pm on Wednesday to a flat at The Cloisters on Hall Gate Lane.

The door to the property - situated on Stalmine Hall Park, next to the Seven Stars pub - had been set on fire causing severe smoke damage throughout the building.

DI Gareth Willis said: “We think that this fire was started deliberately and it’s only by sheer luck that no one was in the building or they would have been seriously hurt.

“I would appeal to those who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the fire, or similarly anyone with any information at all that may assist us with finding whoever was responsible to contact us.”

Anybody with any information can contact Police on 101, quoting log number 1365 of May 7 2014.
