Plans for field go on show

Residents will be able to get a closer look at the vision for King George’s Playing Field, in Thornton,which include a woodland trail with play equipment.

Also included in the plans, which will be on show at Marsh Mill, Thornton, on Saturday, are new seating and picnic tables as well as improved drainage.

Earlier in the year, those who use the site and live locally shared their ideas for how the area could be improved.

Wyre Council is now inviting people to view the proposals they helped to shape.

Mark Billington, service director for people and places at Wyre Council, said: “We’ve created proposals based on feedback from the original consultation that we think will allow more people in the local community to make use of the playing field.

“Alongside sculptures and play equipment to appeal to families and encourage exploration of the woodland and brook, we’ve taken into account requests for seating, picnic areas and additional bins.

“We’d like to know what residents think about the idea of a dedicated outdoor gym area or trim trail and if they think the pavilion would be used more if it was improved.

“With the views of local people shaping our work, we hope to transform the area into an attractive green space that can be enjoyed by all.”

Drainage improvements form a vital element of the improvements so the site can carry more matches by local football and rugby union players.

Anyone interested in viewing the plans can drop in at the event at Marsh Mill, on Fleetwood Road,at any time between 10.30am and 1.30pm.

There is £54,000 available to improve the playing fields and the land adjacent, north of Royles Brook, which lie between Thornton Health and Fitness Centre and Marsh Mill Shopping Village on Fleetwood Road North.

Dedicated to the memory of King George V, the playing fields were first formed in the 1930s before being further developed under the design direction of the famous Thomas Mawson practice in the 1960s.
