SUPERMARKET chain Booths could move into Poulton’s Teanlowe Centre under radical new plans unveiled today.
Earlier this year the supermarket chain showcased plans for a new and improved store located on the car park of its Ball Street outlet.
But Wyre Council has now confirmed negotiations into a joint venture between the Teanlowe Centre and Booths Supermarket are ongoing.
Wyre councillor Barry Birch, said there was an air of anticipation in Poulton.
He said: “A proposed plan from Booths received great support from local people during a public consultation period.
“I have to say that this is one of a number of proposals for Poulton and we are awaiting the potential purchase of the Teanlowe Centre, which we understand will be working with Booths supermarket for a possible joint venture.
“As mentioned, these are exciting times but we need the traders in the town to be positive and patient.
“We are not talking years but in the very near future – but until legal formalities have been completed, we are not in a position to proceed immediately.”
Wyre Council has also revealed plans for a monthly market in the town.
Coun Birch said; “Our marketing manager Julian Brent is looking at the possibility of a monthly market in Poulton.
“We feel this is an exciting proposal and look forward to markets being part of the regeneration in the very near future.”
The announcement has led to calls for a revitalised Traders’ Association to work with the council on any proposed developments.
George McCaffer, of the Market Hall, Poulton, is chair of the current association but says numbers are dwindling.
He wants business owners to re-energise the group and said: “When I reformed the association I had a good response, but over the years numbers have dwindled.”
