A group of angry residents today called for more to be done to restrict parking on their road amid claims commuters blocked the highway and made it difficult for people to park outside their own homes.
Derby Road in Poulton is used by commuters using the nearby train station, on Breck Road, and shoppers.
Now seven families have signed an open letter calling for more to be done to reduce parking by visitors to the road, asking for a self-funding residents’ parking permit scheme to be introduced to deter visitors leaving cars for up to three weeks at a time.
They have said they fear updates to the railway, including the electrification of the line and increased capacity will only add to the problems.
Resident Joyce Sumner said: “I feel the residents of Poulton in the environs of the railway station are being let down and deprived.
“For years we have requested the provision, only for the request to be rejected.”
Residents have said it is time for Lancashire County Council’s criteria for residents parking to be reviewed, querying how to up to date it is given the average number of cars per household and the levels of commuters using Poulton train station. Sim Lane-Dixon, the county council’s highways manager for Wyre, said: “We’re aware of the pressures on parking in a number of roads around Poulton train station due to competing demands of residents, commuters and shoppers, however we currently have no plans to introduce residents parking schemes in the Wyre area.
“We’ll shortly be consulting on a highways and transport masterplan for the Fylde coast, including Wyre, which will present an opportunity to consider capacity issues across the transport network and the how these may be addressed in future.”
Mrs Sumner added: “We used to live in a very nice and desirable part of Poulton conservation area, now we live in a car park where we can’t park.”
In January of last year residents on Park Road, Poulton, just metres from Derby Road, renewed their calls for their own avenue to have a residents parking scheme implemented.
