But they were involved in the crash on Preston New Road, Marton, at around 12.20pm, when a car went into the back of the vehicle they were travelling in.

Mr Stacey, best known for playing Alex Moss in the ITV soap, has told how he raced to help the driver of the car be-hind them, who he said was knocked unconscious in the smash.

He said: “A car came into the back of us and crashed into two others, the driver was quite hurt.

“I jumped out of the car and tried to help him.

“His door wouldn’t open and he was just lying there, his eyes were closed and he was shaking.

“He was unconscious so I was trying to get him to come round.”

The driver of the car, a black Renault Clio, a man in his late teens, was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, a spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene, at the corner of the main road with Clifton Crescent and the road was closed for around 45 minutes while the debris and damaged cars, including the one belonging to Mr Maloney, were dealt with.

Mr Stacey takes on the title role in pantomime Peter Pan, while pal Mr Maloney will play his arch-nemesis Captain Hook in the show, which runs April 3-11 at the North Pier theatre.

They are joined by local girl Beth McMillan, who plays Tinkerbell, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Steven Hall, playing Pirate Winkle, and a firm favourite in the resort’s panto scene, Chris Martin, who will make his fifth appearance on North Pier playing Smee.
