TWO teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder a three-month-old baby boy.
Police were called to an address on Hawkeshead Terrace, Mereside, after reports a baby had been discovered with “serious” head injuries.
The youngster was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital but was later transferred to a specialist children’s unit in Manchester where he remains in a critical condition.
The child’s condition has failed to improve and detectives confirmed they had arrested the two teenagers on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday morning.
A spokesman for Blackpool Police said: “An investigation is underway after a three-month-old baby boy was taken to hospital on Monday with serious head injuries.
“The baby is currently in a critical condition in hospital.
“A 19-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently in custody helping detectives with their inquiries.”
Neighbours last night spoke of their shock over the incident and said there had never been any trouble at the address before.
Ann Allen, of the Mereside Residents Association, said: “There has been a huge police presence and they have had a forensic team in the house.
“All the neighbours are very concerned. Nobody likes to hear of a baby being injured and everyone is just anxious there is a happy outcome.
“The whole family will be distraught.”
Neighbours said the baby’s mother also has a daughter, believed to be around 18 months old, and has lived on Mereside all her life.
Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s very sad when you hear of something happening to a baby. There have been a lot of police in the area.”
