Police said the car veered on to the opposite side of the road before mounting the pavement, striking a lamppost and overturning, near to the junction with Dean Street.

The driver, a 38-year-old man, and his passengers, a 28-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, were taken to Royal Preston Hospital where they remain.

They are each from Liverpool.

The driver suffered a broken leg and the male passenger, who was sat in the back of the car, suffered head injuries.

He is in a serious but stable condition.

The female passenger, who was sat in the front of the vehicle, suffered whiplash.

Road Policing Sgt Malcolm Bell said: “There was only the one vehicle involved and we need any witnesses to come forward so we can ascertain just how this serious accident has come to happen.”
