Two nurses who know first-hand the devastating effect of dementia are getting their walking boots on to help others.

Francesca Maria Chiappe Hall and Dina Bowey, who work at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, will be joined by cousin Maddalena Vettese for a Memory Walk, from the Glitter Ball in South Shore to the Comedy Carpet, on Sunday May 17.

It is in memory of their
uncle, Eugenio Luigi Chiappe and Maddalena’s grandmother, or ‘Nonna’, Luigina Vettese.

And they hope others will join them and their friends and colleagues on the walk, starting at 1.30pm.

The event will raise money for two charities – Blue Skies Hospital Fund, the charity behind Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and its Peace Of Mind dementia appeal, and the Alzheimer’s Society. Francesca, 26, from Blackpool, who works on the older people’s ward at The Vic, said: “As a family, we have had vast experience of dementia, as it has had an increasing impact on our family. We want to ensure people have the best care in hospital and know what support and services are available locally.

“Both myself and Dina see every day the effects of dementia on patients and families – we see how simply a different environment can help calm patients and keep them from being distressed, and how resources such as memory boxes, books and our memory corridor can ensure patients with dementia feel safe and well cared for during their stay in hospital.”
