A LONG-SERVING councillor has been nominated to take on the role of Mayor of Blackpool for the forthcoming year.
Coun Eddie Collett secured the nomination from his peers after an announcement by council leader Simon Blackburn during a town hall meeting on Wednesday (24) evening.
Coun Collett, who represents the South Shore ward of Tyldesley on Blackpool Council, received a round of applause from the chamber following the announcement.
The election of the new Mayor will take place at a meeting of the full council on May 14, at which point Coun Sylvia Taylor, who currently holds the position, will step down.
As well as chairing council meetings, the Mayor has a ceremonial role which involves taking part in activities ranging from the opening of conferences to presiding over ceremonies for new British citizens.
The position is rotated on a year by year basis.
