Garstang’s new mayor, Peter Ryder, fell in love with the community which became his adopted town when he moved to Wyre in 1983.

For the next 12 months, Peter, a familiar and respected figure around Garstang, will be the first citizen of the town, having served on the town council for the past three years.

To be serving as mayor for the coming year is a great honour

Following the mayor-making installation at St Thomas’ Parish and Community Hall, in Church Street, last Thursday, he said: “To be serving as mayor of Garstang for the coming year is a great honour and I shall do my utmost to serve this wonderful town to the best of my abilities.”

By his side as mayoress will be his wife, Lyn, a retired librarian who worked at Garstang library for many years.

Peter’s particular interests on Garstang Council have been in the realm of communications and social media. He was a leading light in launching the council’s website and social media policy, and is now concentrating on improvements to Moss Lane playground and the launch of a new town council award scheme for individuals and community groups which promote the town.

Peter also serves as a magistrate, is a trustee of Garstang Millennium Green, and an active member (and former president) of Garstang and District Lions Club.

He added: “We have a great market town but we need to grow our community facilities, support our excellent independent shops and welcome our new residents and encourage them to join our community.

“That is both the challenge and the opportunity”.
