A FYLDE coast MP has called on the Government to continue its new grant scheme for victims of the Thalidomide catastrophe.
The three-year grant pilot scheme is now in its second year and is being reviewed by the Government.
Blackpool North and Cleveleys MP Paul Maynard spoke on behalf of one of his Cleveleys constituents in the Parliamentary debate.
He said: “My constituent, who is a Thalidomide patient, has made clear to me the great importance of continuing the scheme.
“They are a declining group of people with increasing needs and any failure by the state to meet those needs would be absolutely unconscionable.
“Will the minister reassure me that there is no prospect of that occurring under this Government?”
Minister of State for Care Services Paul Burstow replied: “The Government is carrying on with the evaluation. The grant is not intended to meet all the additional costs that victims face.
“There are other sources of public funding.”
