A mother has made her first appearance at court accused of causing the death of her two-week-old baby.

Letisha Roberts, 21, was in a flat in Blackpool, with her child, Alesha in November 2012.

The baby died in the same bed as the one used by her mother, the prosecution alleges.

Roberts of Herrick Street, Liverpool, faced two allegations when she appeared in the dock at the resort’s magistrates court in front of District Judge Jim Clark.

The first charge states that Roberts caused the baby’s death or were,or ought to have been aware there was a significant risk of serious physical harm being caused to Alesha and she failed to take steps to protect her from that risk.

The second allegation accused Roberts of willfully neglecting, illtreating or exposing Alesha in a manner likely to cause the baby unnecessary suffering or injury to health.

The Judge told Roberts the charges must be heard by Preston Crown Court.

She was bailed to appear at the higher court on October 3.
