Marshals and cash help for Kirkham and Wesham Club Day are still wanted to further boost the event – even after the intervention of a Fylde millionaire ensured it goes ahead.
Organisers have expressed their deep gratitude to David Haythornthwaite, the boss of Lytham-based Tangerine Holdings, who has offered to fund the cost of the event as well as provide marshals after reading an appeal for help.
The appeal also generated other offers from potential sponsors as well as Rotary Club officials who have also offered marshals - but chairman of the organisers, Steve Cross, said any other help would be very welcome.
“We are so grateful to everyone who has come forward to help and we are all looking forward to a very successful Club Day going ahead as planned on June 14,” he said,
“However, our costing is an unknown quantity at the moment and any donations are very welcome.
“Also, although we have a good promise of marshals, I wouldn’t want that to deter any local people who have been involved in that capacity in the past from helping out again and I would urge them to get in touch.”
Mr Haythornthwaite, who is also chairman of AFC Fylde and organiser of Lytham’s St George’s Festival, stepped in after Mr Cross and his fellow organisers feared this year’s event might not go ahead because of increased costs associated with a change of marshalling responsibilities away from the police.
Through a link with AFC Fylde, Mr Haythornthwaite is to arrange for students from Preston’s College to marshal the Kirkham event, as well as next month’s St George’s Day Festival in Lytham.
Kirkham and Wesham Club Day is traditionally the opening event of the Fylde club days and galas annual calendar.
It will be followed on June 21 by Freckleton Club Day, with Lytham Club Day on June 28, Wrea Green Field Day on July 5, Mewton Salwick and Clifton Field Day on July 12 and St Annes Carnival on July 12 and 13. Mr Cross can be contacted on (01253) 390678.
