A WOMAN was brutally stabbed in a terrifying knife attack in Blackpool town centre.

The 35-year-old victim was walking along Central Drive at 2am yesterday when the vicious attacker struck – stabbing her three times with a kitchen knife in the chest, stomach and hand.

Police are now hunting for the unknown knifeman while the local community has been left shocked by what detectives described as an unprovoked and motiveless attack on a lone woman.

Det Sgt Steve Coleman, of Blackpool CID, said: “He stabbed her three times to the body. She has a puncture wound to her right breast area and one to the right side of her stomach. She also has a cut on her hand.

“She is still in hospital receiving treatment and we don’t yet know if she is going to have to undergo surgery.

“It appears to be an unprovoked attack on a lone woman. The motive is unknown and we are exploring all possibilities.”

The woman had just bought a kebab from Ali’s takeaway on Central Drive and was walking home when the attacker pounced near William Hill bookmakers.

Detectives believe the man approached his victim from the side before plunging a small bladed kitchen knife into her three times.

The attacker was then seen running off down Erdington Road.

A taxi driver who was passing by at the time rang 999 and a nearby uniformed police officer raced to the scene and called for an ambulance.

The woman was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Local residents today described their shock.

Kerry Regan, 23, who lives off Central Drive, said: “I’ve got a son who will turn one next month. You don’t want this sort of thing happening in an area where there are so many kids.

“It’s horrible. I hope the woman is OK. It puts you off going out at night. It’s awful.”

Magdalena Szukalska, 25, from central Blackpool, added: “It’s upsetting to hear something like this has happened. It’s shocking. It makes you feel worried about going out at night. I hope the police catch him.”

Richard Knight, from Scrap Converters on Central Drive, said: “It’s frightening when it happens at any time of day.

“It’s worse when it’s an unprovoked attack.

“There is CCTV around here so hopefully they should have picked it up.

“There are a lot of alleyways around here but during the day there seems to be a lot of police presence around.

“It was a completely different street 15 years ago. It was a great street but over the last 10 years it’s gone right down.”

Police today reassured members of the public as they believed it to be an isolated incident.

Det Sgt Coleman added: “We are still in the early stages of the inquiry. If anyone can provide any information in respect of this incident, if they can contact Blackpool Police any information will be dealt with in confidence.

“We are obtaining statements from some witnesses and looking at CCTV. We are also tracing the taxi driver.”

The attacker is white, in his 30s, of medium build with a short hair or shaven head. He was wearing a long sleeved blue top.

Anyone with information is urged to call Blackpool Police on (01253) 293933.
