A MAN has been charged with assault after a 43-year-old was left in a coma following an incident in Fleetwood on Saturday night.

Michael Townley, 24, of Poulton Road, Fleetwood, faces one charge of wounding or causing grievous bodily harm and has been remanded in custody to appear at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

The attack happened just before midnight on Saturday night at the junction of Hatfield Avenue and Broomfield Road in Fleetwood.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene and the victim was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital with serious head injuries.

Doctors confirmed he had fractured his skull and he was immediately placed in an induced coma before being transferred to Preston Royal Hospital.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.
