The attack happened on a narrow road at the junction between Waterloo Road and Bolton Street between 3pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Det Con Steve Lucas, of Blackpool CID, said: “A white Transit van pulled up and two males got out and the younger of the two attacked the man with a 4ft iron bar. They then got back into the van and reversed onto Bolton Street.”

The victim was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with a suspected fractured skull and facial injuries.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the assault.

The younger male who used the iron bar was described as white, in his 20s, with shaved fair-coloured hair that was slightly longer on top. He stood around 5ft 8ins and was of a stocky build. The older male was described as being in his late 30s or early 40s, white, and taller than the younger man. He had a heavy build and short grey hair, and was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and boots at the time of the attack.
