DETECTIVES investigating the attempted abduction of a two-year-old girl in Blackpool have arrested a man.

DETECTIVES investigating the attempted abduction of a two-year-old girl in Blackpool have arrested a man.

The 31-year-old from the town was arrested on suspicion of attempted child abduction and was today being quizzed by detectives.

A massive police hunt began at 6.40pm on Thursday after a man entered the back garden of a house on Erdington Road.

Using a knife he slashed a children’s trampoline before attempting to take the little Ellie Gibson.

The toddler’s mum, Janine, disturbed the offender before he ran off.

Police have flooded the area with officers as part of the hunt for the knifeman.

Det Chief Insp Andrea Barrow, of Blackpool CID, today said: “I’m still very keen for anyone who was in the Erdington Road area between 5pm and 7pm who may have seen anything suspicious to contact police.

“The man is described as white, around 5ft 10in and between 20 and 30 years old.

“He had short brown hair and was wearing a dark T-shirt, black trousers and was possibly on a bike.

“If anyone recognises this description and can recall seeing him in the area then I would ask them to call the police.”

Ellie’s mum, who rescued her daughter, said there had been a large police presence around Erdington Road since the terrifying incident.

She said: “There have been police operation vans on Erdington Road and Kent Road. There has been a lot of police out and about.

“They have been doing door to door inquiries and looking at CCTV.

“Most people around here know what’s happened so they know to be wary.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Blackpool Police on (01253) 293933 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
