Blackpool will not get a rail link to London, the Office of Rail Regulation has announced.

Virgin Trains had hoped to run a twice daily service from Blackpool North to London Euston beginning in December, but has lost its appeal.

The original plans were thrown out by Network Rail last month when the operator claimed the West Coast Main Line was too congested.

Virgin appealed the decision, however the Office of Rail Regulation - the adjudicator - has today decided not to grant the company permission.

The Gazette launched its ‘On Track to the Capital’ campaign and gathered 5,023 signatures in a petition in an attempt to overturn the decision.

The petition was handed in to the Office of Rail Regulation, in London, alongside MPs Mark Menzies, Paul Maynard and Gordon Marsden.
