Young gymnasts leap for joy at funding boost

THESE young gymnasts are beaming with joy as they celebrate their club's fourth anniversary.

Gym Mania, based in Poulton, is going from strength-to-strength.

With more than 200 members it has just received 1,500 worth of colourful new equipment from France.

When the voluntary-run, non-profit marking club for children aged two-and-a-half upwards first started, it had just six members.

As it is run for fun rather than competitions, it only takes place on the weekend.

Sarah Oxley, a primary school teacher who runs the club on Breck Road, said: “Things have just grown and grown and they are still growing. We are really pleased with our new equipment, we recently got some new asymmetric bars and they are great because they are in all different colours – red, yellow and green.

“They look really nice and bright and cheerful for the children. We just get things like that through our own fundraising.

“We have been surprised at how the club has taken off during the four years. We only run at the weekends, because we aren’t competitive and we’re not here to make profit.

“Gymnastics is great for children physically, but has all sorts of other benefits as well, it helps with self-esteem. It helps improve communication and social skills.

“Especially for the pre-school children, it helps get them used to being in that sort of routine and meeting other children, ready for when they start school.”
