Women stabbed on Lancashire street

A murder inquiry was under way today after a woman was stabbed to death in the street.

The victim was attacked by a man in Lancaster at about 8.30am, police said.

Officers were called to School House Lane in the Halton area of the city, where they discovered the injured woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A 43-year-old man - understood to be the woman's partner - was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The age and identity of the victim has yet to be confirmed.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Toole, from Lancashire Constabulary's Major Investigation Team, said: "We are at the very early stages of an investigation.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and contact us. I need to build up a clear picture of events in order to establish what has happened."

Superintendent Jon Puttock, from Lancaster Police, said: "I would like to reassure the public that crimes of this nature are very rare.

"Our local neighbourhood police teams will be out in the area throughout the day and engaging with residents to provide a high-visibility presence and to offer reassurances to the local community."

The area was sealed off while crime scene investigators conducted forensic checks and a major incident room was opened at Lancaster police station.

Anyone with information should contact Lancaster Police on 01524 63333 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
