When darkness falls on The Illuminations

THOUSANDS of tourists flock to see the Illuminations every year.

But when the season ends, the tableaux do not go unnoticed as former employees at the Illuminations Depot are said to watch over the building.

The depot on Rigby Road is an old building which has a history as a donkey stable prior to taking on its current use.

Due to the nature of the work, involving a lot of nightshifts, staff are often in the building late at night and several of them have had what they perceived as supernatural experiences.

Peter Parr, external operations manager at the depot, had "an experience" after one of his fellow employees died while at work.

He said: "I had an experience in the shed when I was a foreman. I'd made a cup of tea in the office and I thought I heard someone walk across the room but there was no-one there. So I legged it!"

Mr Parr says other employees working at the depot claim to feel someone is watching over them and many have also noticed dramatic drops in temperature.

A group of ghost hunters visited the Illuminations Depot last week, as part of a number of ghost tours run by Supernatural Events, to find out more.

Paul Bond, of Hathaway Road, Fleetwood, said he sensed spirit activity as soon as he walked into the depot. He said: "I thought I could sense things when I was younger but I didn't understand it then.

"I was very sceptical at first but it's all to do with relaxation.

"I've started getting into it again now. I use tarot cards to communicate the past, present and future.

"As soon as I walked into the depot I could feel something. I feel like someone has hanged themself here."

John Garside, 29, of Lindale Gardens, South Shore, said: "I've been into it for ages.

"I'm a white witch. You take a year and a day to learn the craft. You learn about the craft so you don't abuse it."

Mr Garside said he felt wobbly in the tool room of the Illuminations Depot while other people reported feeling as though someone was grabbing their legs in the same spot.

Wobbly

Tour leader Stephen Mercer said: "People have felt wobbly in one particular room.

"One lady on the tour was actually pushed over by a force and people have felt someone has suffered a head injury.

"We've asked the spirits questions using a pendulum. We've found out that there were stables here before the Illuminations Depot was built.

"A 21-year-old boy died in 1915 after being pushed over by a donkey."
