We're wheelie ready for total recycling!
WHEELIE bins will be delivered to around 150 more streets in Blackpool by the end of next month as the final batch of residents join the recycling revolution.
It will mean that approximately 53,000 homes will have the opportunity to recycle their domestic waste.
The latest phase of bins are to houses in some of the most densely populated areas of the town so they will receive just two bins instead of three.
However, there will still be some residents whose properties are not suitable for wheelie bins and the council is proposing to introduce a kerbside service for them.
Coun Steve Houghton, Blackpool Council cabinet member with responsibility for waste, said: "In February we will start the final roll-out of wheeled bins in the town.
"This will mean that approximately 53,000 homes will be using the service which will hopefully further boost our 31.7 per cent recycling rate.
"We will be providing residents with all they need to know about their service. Also officers and councillors will be out on the streets on the day to answer any questions."
The streets getting their bins next month are spread out throughout Blackpool and are terraced properties which do not have space for three bins. Instead they will receive one bin for glass, metal cans and plastic bottles, and a second bin for residual waste.
They will also receive a blue bag for waste paper but green waste and cardboard will not be collected separately.
Future
However, Coun Doreen Holt, who lives on Erdington Road, one of the streets earmarked, said: "I'm not against recycling because I realise it's a necessity for the future of the planet. But I do hope the council considers elderly and disabled people because in areas like ours I think some people would find it difficult."
In a report on the roll-out, Paul Taylor, assistant director of Blackpool Streetscene, said: "Modified collection and return arrangements will be introduced for those properties where residents may struggle to present their bins for collection due to the distance of their property to the presentation/collection point."
