VIDEO: Our ‘Longest Day’ is a local hit

Waiting for Video...

A Gazette video celebrating the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year has won praise from across the Fylde coast.

Kind messages have flooded in from celebrities and readers after entertainment writer Steve Canavan’s song about life in Blackpool on the Longest Day – June 21 – was posted on our website.

The song was written and performed around the resort’s landmarks – from the top of The Tower to Madame Tussauds – and has been viewed almost 3,000 times via Twitter and YouTube.

Other videos were shot at Blackpool Zoo, Fairhaven Spitfire Memorial and Blackpool Dog Show by Gazette photographers and journalists. They were compiled to capture an account of Fylde life.

West End star Jodie Prenger introduced the video while David Heaton, a paralympic fencer who has represented Team GB at five paralympics, including London 2012, took to Twitter to praise the video.

He said: “Fantastic! Loved it, great work.”

Other tweeters were just as enthusiastic.

Blackpool FC supporters’ Association chairman Glenn Bowley said: “Steve, you are a genius – that is absolutely fantastic.”

Steve was filmed in the new Blackpool FC kit singing at Blomfield Road – as well as with a waxwork of TV presenter Davina McCall at The Tower.

Gemma Cain added: “Well done Steve and The Gazette – a great listen.”

Posters on Blackpool FC message board, A View from the Tower, called for the song to be used as an advert for the resort. Sambuka wrote: “The council should be all over this, using it for advertising in the town. Great stuff, really well done.”

Davepick1 added: “Loved it – good tune and lyrics.”

Everyday scenes at primary schools, cafes and fire stations were also used to bring the song to life.
