Tram Sunday could yet be saved

FLEETWOOD Transport Festival could be saved.

Organisers will hold crisis talks with Wyre Council next week in a bid to save the event.

A lack of support prompted the festival committee to cancel Tram Sunday, which attracts 40,000 people each year.

Coun Russell Forsyth, Leader of the council, said: "The festival is a fantastic event which attracts thousands of visitors every year. We must do all we can to make sure it continues."

Festival chairman Keith Yates revealed there would be meetings with regional and national companies, who had contacted them since news broke about the festival's demise.

But he sounded a note of caution.

He said: "I don't know what they want. We will have to see what their proposals are. Revival meetings had been held in the past, only for support to eventually dwindle.

"We need people with the acumen and skills to run the event. Over the years we have had lots of promises which have come to nought."

Organisers are appealing for people with business and communication skills, PR media and legal skills to contact them.

Mr Yates said: "I would like to get people with a tourism background because it's what we do: we are a big tourist attraction.

"We have company law and health and safety legislation - all this has to be satisfactory. If we skimp and ignore rules and anything happens it would be very difficult to live with ourselves.

"It affects the borough and the greater area indirectly. It would be a fallacy to thing it's purely a Fleetwood thing.

"People come for the weekend and visit other attractions on Saturday.

We only have limited guest house accommodation in Fleetwood so people must stop somewhere else."
