Tram shelters finally on track
WHATEVER the weather, tram users will now be sheltered from the elements.
Two new tram shelters, costing 15,000 each, have been installed at Victoria Square, Cleveleys.
Residents and visitors were left to brave the skies while waiting for a tram as councillors and transport bosses wrangled over the cost.
But a deal brokered between Blackpool Transport Services, Wyre Council, Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council, has finally put paid to misery in the rain.
The two new shelters, paid for by Lancashire County Council, are three times the length of a normal shelter and painted in tramway green.
The future maintenance and cleaning of the shelters will be paid for by Blackpool Transport Services which will fund this through income generated by advertising hoardings.
They will be put up in the vicinity of Victoria Square following permission granted by Wyre Council in a 10-year agreement.
Steve Burd, managing director of Blackpool Transport Services, said: "We are delighted that the four organisations have been able to work together to provide this much needed facility for the benefit of the users of the tramway in Cleveleys."
Commuters living in Cleveleys had been forced to wait in the rain for nearly two years since the old tram shelters were torn down.
The old metal tram shelters had fallen into disrepair and represented a health and safety hazard.
Blackpool Transport and Wyre Council spent months arguing over where advertising hoardings could be placed in Wyre. The company wanted the advertising sites in return for taking on the maintenance of the shelter.
