Tram driver on death charge
A TRAM driver has made his first appearance at court accused of causing the death of a pensioner at Blackpool by driving his tram dangerously
The court heard he is said to have driven the tram at five times the four miles an hour speed limit in use on the stretch where the tragedy took place.
Paul Edensor, 36, of Alexandra Road, Thornton, is charged with causing the death of Moreen Foxwell by dangerous driving on August 5 last year.
It is the first time a tram driver in the resort has faced such an offence.
Edensor was allegedly driving his tram without due care near the Norbreck Castle stop, at five times the 4mph speed zone for that section of the tram track.
Mrs Foxwell, of Trinant, Caerphilly, was in the resort celebrating her 70th birthday with her husband, Barry.
Mrs Foxwell and her husband were waiting for a tram.
She suffered multiple injuries and was treated in Blackpool before being moved to Nevill Hall Hospital Abergavenny to be nearer her family.
Mrs Foxwell died on September 12 last year.
A post mortem revealed she died of a blood clot on her lung.
Steven Townley, defending, said there would be no indication of plea by his client at this stage and the magistrates agreed to send the case for trial at Preston Crown Court.
Committal proceedings will take place on September 9.
Edensor was granted unconditional bail.
