Traffic could be banned from square
A DRAMATIC U-turn could see buses and taxis banned from the revamped St John's Square – just a week after they were allowed to return.
After the 4.7m revamp, Blackpool Council banned all vehicles from the streets.
But just last week they opened the square to buses and taxis to bring pedestrians closer to shops.
Now, council bosses have admitted they want to see St John's vehicle-free once again. Peter Callow, leader of Blackpool Council, said: "My ultimate aim is to have no traffic at all in St John's Square.
"It's been completed to such a high standard it'd be a shame to spoil it."
Visitors to St John's had been furious vehicles were allowed on to the square, branding the move "an accident waiting to happen".
Eileen Brandon, 51, of Doncaster Road, Marton, said: "Allowing buses and taxis into St John's Square is ridiculous, they will ruin all the paving and then it's just a waste of money.
"It really is a death trap and I can't believe there hasn't been an accident.
"It's not before time the council are banning buses and taxis."
And a Gazette poll revealed 80 per cent of readers did not think allowing buses and taxis in St John's Square was safe.
