Traders slam council litter rules
ANGRY traders today slammed council legislation as ridiculous and petty after being warned against putting litter into street bins.
Eco-conscious Blackpool businessman Mike Bentley was outraged after being told he should not put rubbish which blows on to his forecourt into street bins.
Blackpool Council officers informed him once it lands on his land, it becomes his property and should be disposed of through a commercial waste collection.
Mr Bentley, owner of CCM Halfway Garage on St Annes Road, South Shore, said: "A couple of workers from the council came to ask if I'd been putting rubbish in the bin on the pavement.
"I'm very environmentally friendly so I pick up litter that ends up on my forecourt and put it in a carrier bag and in the bin outside.
"But the council says anything that ends up on my forecourt belongs to me and becomes trade waste so I shouldn't transfer it into a private collection bin.
"It's ridiculous. They are taking one legislation to the extreme."

“We regularly audit the contents of public bins to ensure businesses aren’t disposing of their own business waste in them illegally.
“As a council we offer a commercial waste collection service that can be accessed for as little as 49 a year.
“Other companies are available and we would advise people to pay for the service that best fits their needs.”
