Tower to be 'free for all'
BLACKPOOL'S historic Tower will open its doors to the public for free for the first time in its history.
New operators Merlin today revealed they plan to charge visitors admission to individual attractions inside the Grade 1 structure, but people will be able to use the main accesses free of charge.
It is believed to be the first time since The Tower opened in 1894 – when admission was sixpence – that people will have been allowed into the historic halls for free.
It currently costs 14 for children and OAPs and 17 for adults to visit The Tower attractions and Circus.
The changes will not come into effect this year as Merlin, which was chosen by the council to run The Tower, is still finalising its plans.
Blackpool Council leader Coun Peter Callow said: "There are so many diverse attractions in the building and Merlin believe this is the best way forward.
"They have vast experience running attractions worldwide and I have absolute confidence in them."
The council's director of regeneration and tourism Helen France added: "We are thrilled with the progress Merlin has made and the way they are making The Tower something for everyone in the town."
