Torrential weather and floods on way

IT is time to batten down those hatches!

Severe weather warnings have been issued as forecasters warn more torrential rain is set to sweep across the Fylde coast.

And the bad weather which began at the start of the month is set to get worse over the next 72 hours.

Flood warnings have also been issued for some parts of the coast with south Fylde and parts of North Shore and Cleveleys likely to be hit.

High winds and rain are set to hit the Fylde from lunchtime today and will stay overhead until the start of next week.

The latest installment of awful weather follows one of the dullest and wettest Augusts on record.

Forecasters today told The Gazette up to 50mm of rain could fall on the Fylde over the next few days.

Sarah Holland, from the Met Office, said: "The rain which we have experienced over the last few days will continue into the weekend and beyond.

"We have issued severe weather warnings for many parts of the North West, including the Fylde for Saturday and Sunday.

"Rain is set to start on Friday lunchtime, with a dry spell on Friday night followed by torrential downpours for the rest of the weekend.

"It doesn't look as though we are going to get our Indian Summer until maybe the early part of October and even then it doesn't look good."

Rural parts of the Fylde have already suffered due to massive downpours with the A584 near Warton flooded opposite the Land Registry as well as the Moss Side road leading into Wrea Green.

And in Cleveleys, Green Drive flooded yesterday morning due to overflowing drains.

Resident David Hewitt said: "The road was passable, but once again we have been hit because of the bad rain we have experienced.

"Our drains from Durban Court run into United Utilities drains on Green Drive and when these are blocked, as can be seen from the photographs, rainwater from our building cannot get away and therefore our garages get flooded."
