Thug locked up for brutal attack

A man has been jailed for joining in a "cowardly attack" in Blackpool.

Marcin Blicharski decided to get involved after seeing a man kicking victim Phillip Matthews as he lay motionless on the ground at Whitegate Drive in March 2009.

The 34-year-old approached the pair and joined in the assault, twice kicking Mr Matthews who lay prostate at the time.

So violent was the attack, one witness described hearing a 'sickening thud' each time the victim's head struck the pavement.

He suffered a broken ankle while the assault continued.

Although the other attacker remains at large, Blicharski, who is Polish, was captured by police and later admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Sentencing him at Preston Crown Court to 30 weeks in prison, Judge Stuart Baker told the defendant the incident was all the more shocking because the defendant would have been unable to protect himself from serious injury during the onslaught.

He added: "You chose to go and join in an assault against a man who was offering no resistance, lying motionless on the ground.

"While you were doing that, one of the other men continued his attack at the same time upon Mr Matthews.

"Although I accept you were not responsible for fracturing his ankle, you took part in what I regard as a cowardly attack upon a man who was clearly incapable of resisting or defending himself."
