Thousands watch air spectacular

BLACKPOOL was buzzing as thousands flocked to the seafront to watch the resort's awesome air display.

Holidaymakers and residents packed on to the Promenade from Central to South Pier as some of the world's most impressive aircraft took to the skies.

The RAF and RNLI helicopter search and rescue demonstration set the show rolling before the US Air Force Stratotanker – an air-to-air refueller – roared past.

A young Guinot wing walker left spectators with goosebumps as the plane looped, rolled and dangled her upside down – all while she was still waving to the audience!

The Bell Huey helicopter, The Blades, RAF King Air and Extra 260 were impressive as they swooped across the shoreline with the sun beaming down behind them.

But for Dave Simpson, 36, from Bispham, the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was the most spectacular.

He said: "It was absolutely amazing. The Lancaster bomber was immense. My dad told me all about it when I was growing up and I've always wanted to see it."

The rare sight of a Vulcan Bomber, which showed off camouflaged underwings as it darted into the air in a spiral climb, was also a highlight.

Ellie Parkinson, 22, from Bispham, said: "I'm so glad I got the chance to see the Vulcan, it was brilliant."

But the true excitement came with the roar of the Red Arrows as they flew over spectators' heads with their trademark red, white and blue smoke trailing behind them.

The pilots manoeuvred the awesome machines into breathtaking formations just 100ft above the sea.

Maureen Cuddy, 58, from Poulton, summed up the afternoon when she said: "It was exhilarating. "There were some lovely planes.

"And the weather made it all the better."
