Talented teens chosen for London stage debut

TWO Fylde coast teens have been picked out of thousands to showcase their dramatic skills on stage in London.

Rowena Malpass, 16, and Dani Wrench, 17, who are both Year 12 students at Lytham St Annes High School, beat more than 4,000 hopefuls from all over the UK to win places on the National Youth Theatre's summer course.

The much coveted opportunity means the girls will spend two weeks in the nation's capital in August rehearsing for a show which will be directed by top industry professionals.

Opportunities

When the two weeks are complete, the show will then be performed at a London theatre.

Dani, 17, of Riversleigh Avenue, Lytham, said: "We are both really excited to be going for the summer course. I never thought I'd actually get accepted.

"The standard was so high at the auditions and some people really stood out.

"I screamed when I got the letter to say I had a place, I just can't believe it."

The National Youth Theatre provides young people aged 13 to 21 from any background the opportunities to develop their creative and social skills through theatrical arts.

Danell Dearden, the school's director of creative and performing arts, heard about the summer course and took six girls from the school's performing arts A-Level course to the auditions in Manchester.

Throughout the day, the girls took part in a group workshop and also had to perform a two-minute monologue.

Dani said: "The solo audition was really nerve-racking, there wasn't a sound in the room when I walked in.

"I performed a piece from Bertolt Brecht's Caucasian Chalk Circle and I was really nervous."

Rowena, of Kensington Road, Ansdell, said: "We'll be meeting up with experienced actors so this is a wonderful opportunity for us to be involved in the theatre world.

"I feel so lucky that we were chosen."

The girls need to raise 1,000 each to cover accommodation and living costs so they are busy thinking up ways of raising the money.

Plans for putting on a band concert at Lowther Gardens and a production in school are already under way, although the girls would be grateful to receive sponsorship.
