They’ve named themselves the Trinity Tadpoles, and two keen swimmers have proved they can go the distance with an open water charity swim.

Dr Laura Edwards and Jo Nicholls took part in the Great North Swim in Lake Windermere on Saturday to raise money for The Gazette’s Hospice Heroes campaign.

We’re aiming to raise £200,000 for the biggest refurbishment in the 29-year-history of Trinity Hospice.

And as workers at the hospice on Low Moor Road, Bispham, Laura and Jo have first-hand experience of the benefits of the ongoing work, so they decided to their bit in helping to pay for it.

Jo, learning co-ordinator, said: “Neither of us are expert swimmers and have never swam in an open water event before so this really was a challenge for us.

“We started off being nervous, but then we were just excited to get out there and do it.

“It came about because we were chatting one lunchtime about how we both wanted to do it, and we decided we’d do it this year for the appeal.

“Working for Trinity allows us to appreciate the crucial work it does.”

The duo completed four open water swims at Blackpool Wake Park, which Jo said was unlike any swimming she’d experienced before.

“It’s like swimming through treacle,” she said.

“There are eels and reeds, and you feel like ducks are going to land on your head!”

The tadpoles aimed to raise £300 for our appeal, but easily smashed their target by raising £660.

They are still accepting sponsorship. For more information, log on to www.justgiving.com/teams/TrinityTadpoles.
