Swings and roundabouts for council fun checkers

IT'S A job full of swings and roundabouts!

Jumping on merry-go rounds and rummaging around in the sandbox may be a fun pastime for youngsters, but for two council workers it's a very serious business.

Lee McCarthy and Steve Livesey are employed to test every piece of equipment in each Fylde Council play area across the borough every week.

It is down to the dynamic duo to ensure every structure is up to scratch and minimize the risk of accidents to youngsters.

Steve, 52, admits the pair do get a few funny looks but says it is his dream job.

He said: "I love the job.

"We are out all of the time. I wouldn't like to be in an office based job like other people.

"As well as testing the equipment we do all other kinds of stuff like welding and joining.

"There are a few confused people when they see a bloke in his fifties on the swings. We do get a few comments from people who are pleased the equipment is being monitored."

The duo are now accredited by the International Register of Play Inspectors after sitting a tough set of practical and written examinations to demonstrate their ability to spot defects before they become a safety problem.

But Lee, 43, says there are occasional problems with being an adult in a child's world.

He added: "The equipment is not really designed for adults but we are ideal to test it due to the additional weight and strain. I do sometimes wish they made the cradle seats a bit bigger though.

"There are nationally set requirements for us to test the equipment and ensure the safety of young people."

Coun Simon Renwick, cabinet member for culture and tourism in Fylde, says the pair perform a vital service for the community.

He said: "The safety of children in the borough is very important to the council and we are well recognised in the North West for having a vigorous inspection routine.

"We are extremely pleased that the thorough and professional work of our inspectors has now been recognised by there international qualification."
