Nurse to appear in misconduct hearing

A nurse is to appear before a misconduct hearing accused of working at a nursing home while on paid NHS sick leave.

Neil John Parkinson, 43, from Preston, was employed by Mersey Care NHS Trust when he is accused of working shifts elsewhere.

He will appear before a professional conduct hearing in London on Monday.

Fans stranded

Around 100 Wigan Athletic football fans were left stranded at Preston train station after signal problems on the line.

Supporters were trying to catch the 22.40 service back to Wigan following their side's 4-1 friendly victory over Preston North End at Deepdale. The fans had to wait around two hours for replacement buses.

Lancashire cop scoops award

A countryside cop has scooped a national award.

PC Duncan Thomas, who has been Lancashire police's dedicated wildlife officer for the past four years, was nominated for the British Association of Shooting and Conservation (BASC) award by bosses at the organisation.

PC Thomas said he was "delighted" to receive the award.

Furniture firm still in talks

Furniture firm bosses who were offered a 1m rescue package are still in "consultation" with a multi-millionaire businessman.

Sir Gerry Robinson handed the lifeline to HJ Berry and Sons on TV to allow them to continue making hand-crafted chairs at Kirk Mills in Chipping, near Preston.

The firm, founded in 1840 and hit by the recession, is still considering its options following an appearance on Channel 4 series Gerry's Big Decision earlier this month.

Finance director Mark Craig said: "We've neither accepted nor declined – we're still in consultation with Sir Gerry and a lot more discussions need to take place."

Open house will be the cat's whiskers

Cat lovers are invited to help raise money for their feline friends.

The Preston branch of Cats Protection is holding its annual open day on Sunday, August 10, at the home of one of its volunteers.

Supporters, volunteers and the general public are invited to Heathfield in Station Road, Much Hoole, near Preston, from 1.30pm.

Admission is by cat food. Tins, pouches, dried food and kitten food all welcome.

Paris – on a folding bike

A Garstang man is cycling from London to Paris – on a folding bike.

Chris Maiden hopes to raise 1,000 for the Meningitis Trust with friend John Griffin.

His Brompton cycle folds to the size of a large carrier bag, but has just three speeds and 16in wheels.

A cooker burst into flames at a house in Leyland.

Fire crews were called to Boundary Street at 6.20pm on Monday.

Park hosts day with nature

A green day is to be held at a Preston park.

Bird and butterfly feeders and the chance to grow flowerpot people will be among the attractions at Ashton Park tomorrow.

It runs from 1pm to 3pm and booking is essential.

Warning to the cowboys

Trading standards chiefs in Lancashire have issued a fresh warning to bogus tradesmen and firms who claim to be members of trade associations.

Lancashire Trading Standards says anyone caught falsely claiming such associations will be dragged before the courts.

It comes after bosses at County Hall prosecuted a roofer who claimed to be part of the Federation of Master Builders.

Enter world of fairytales

A fairytale puppet show is to be held at Preston's Harris Museum tomorrow.

Terry Jones's Fairytales is inspired by the museum's fairytale-inspired Enchanted Worlds exhibition. The event is suitable for children aged four to 11 and runs from 2pm to 2.45pm.

Tower tours

Guided tours of the house at Hoghton Tower will be taking place until the end of September.

The house will be open for tours from 11am to 4pm Mondays to Thursdays and from 1pm to 5pm on Sundays. The cost is adults 6, concessions and students 5.

The next meeting of Avenham and Frenchwood PACT will be held at St James Church, Berry Street, from 6pm on August 6.

Good food on market

A farmers' market will be held at Hoghton Tower next month.

The event takes place on Sunday, August 16 from 10am to 2pm and will include the best of local produce.

Admission is 1 per car and the house will be open for guided tours 1pm to 5pm. The tearoom and stables shop will also be open.
