Stars ready for Blackpool switch-on

THERE'S something for everyone at this year's star-studded Illuminations Switch-on, according to resort tourism bosses.

Cult comic Alan Carr will flick the switch, flanked by X Factor's boyband JLS, mums' favourite Tony Christie and 80s sensation Madness.

Teenage chart topper Pixie Lott will perform for crowds while Strictly Come Dancing favourite Anton Du Beke will also be there on September 4.

Former Blackpool FC footballer David Eyres remembers Alan Carr as a youngster when his dad, Graham Carr, managed the club in the 1990s.

He said: "I came across Alan a few times at training and matches, but I had no idea he would become so famous as a comedian.

"His dad was Alan's total opposite – Graham was boisterous and strict, and quite serious. I never really noticed Alan, as he was fairly quiet back then – but I certainly will recognise him this time.

"It's really good he will be switching on the Lights, as he's got a very infectious personality, if he's headlining an event people always want to go.

"I'll be there with my two daughters, Sophie and Ellie, who both like the more modern acts such as JLS and Pixie Lott."

And tourism experts say the line-up for the Switch-on, broadcast from the top of Blackpool Tower, by Radio 2's Chris Evans, will bring a much-needed boost to the industry.

Peter Taylor, secretary of StayBlackpool, said: "As soon as hoteliers found out who was appearing, they began preparing special offers for people who come and stay for the Switch-on.

"The fact the whole event is free for the council is also brilliant, it's a chance to attract people to the resort without splashing out too much."

Sarah Stone, director of Fylde coast Premier Theatre Company, said: "Most successful shows have aspects that will appeal to everybody.

"And this line-up seems to have that. Alan Carr will bring in the pink pound, while JLS will attract the youngsters, I know my daughter Natalya will want to see them. And everybody loves Tony Christie, so I think it will bring in a lot of people."
