Sports car giant heads for Lancaster

SPORTS car firm TVR is planning to relocate its headquarters and some other operations to Lancaster.

The company – famed for its hand-built, high-speed, high-performance vehicles – will maintain production in Blackpool on a new site.

But a wide range of other activities are due to be switched to Lancaster.

"For the foreseeable future, TVR will operate from a new international headquarters in Lancaster," said managing director David Oxley.

Management, sales, marketing and research and development would all be based here and a TVR museum and archive library sited at the HQ. The move to Lancaster would mean increased efficiency, Mr Oxley added.

TVR plans to move production from its present factory in Bispham, Blackpool, to premises at Squires Gate, near the town's airport.

The Bispham lease is expiring and output is expected to cease there by next year.

Details of what the switch to Lancaster would mean are scant.

The company was founded in 1947 in Blackpool but is now Russian owned. It is understood to have about 260 employees in all departments. Talks are planned with Lancaster City Council on possible locations and planning issues.

"It is very early days in terms of the detail of the proposal," said John Donnellon, council director of regeneration. But the city council welcomes the decision of TVR to locate in Lancaster. It is good to see such a successful brand has chosen Lancaster as its base."
