Spirits of the sky leave them restless down at the zoo

THE elephants at Blackpool Zoo aren't responsible for all the stamping around that is heard.

Former airmen are said to haunt the elephant house at the award-winning attraction.

Before the zoo opened in 1972, the site was home to Blackpool Municipal Aerodrome, which was built in 1929 and opened in 1931.

Jude Rothwell, from the East Park Drive attraction, said: "Keepers feel like they're being watched. They are conscious of someone coming behind them. People have seen strange lights too.

"750,000 airmen trained here, there are a lot of memories. We had a ghost tour here and people felt strange in the elephant house. They felt sick and very agitated. It was weird."

Colleague Della Belk added: "Many of the original aerodrome buildings and hangers are still standing.

Noises

"The keepers' flats are housed in the old air traffic control building with the hangars being used to house the elephants, for food storage, quarantine and maintenance of the zoo site itself."

Staff have reported strange noises, lights and feeling like they are not alone. The former keepers' flats, where the zoo's offices now stand, are also said to be haunted.

Mrs Rothwell added: "Lights would go on and off by themselves. Music would come on when people went out of the room. It's quite spooky."

Spiritualist medium Christine Hawkes, from South Shore, investigated the 'activity' at the zoo.

She said: "It's got so much history. It's not so much haunted, but full of memory energy.

"Everything that we do leaves behind an energy. Even after you have gone and left that experience, the energy is left."
