Seafront Plans Unveiled

FLEETWOOD'S seafront could be radically transformed into a tourist hotspot if new £2m Masterplan ideas get the go ahead.

Wyre Council has unveiled its vision of how the coast can be revamped.

Now it is hoping that the funds needed for the scheme – half of it from the Government – can be delivered.

A bid has just been put in for a 1m Government Sea Change cash, after Wyre's cabinet agreed this week to apply for the grant.

Other funding sources have been identified to support the vision.

The ideas include a skateboarding park and an outdoor performing area at the Marine Hall, which will be at the centre of the plans.

Garry Payne, director of planning and regeneration for Wyre, said: "Our vision is to create a sustainable and distinctive seafront with a mix of facilities that enhance our existing assets, primarily the open setting and the Marine Hall.

"Some innovative projects are on the drawing board and although these will not happen overnight, we have already identified a number of different funding options.

"The fact that we have divided the seafront into zones will also allow us deliver some of these projects in the shorter term, ensuring that the area's regeneration is on-going.

"There will also be full public consultation at every phase."

The plans include ideas for a discovery centre in the Marine Gardens.

Coun Russell Forsyth, leader of the council, said: "Should the Sea Change bid be granted, it will see the start of a vibrant new seafront for Wyre and Fleetwood.

"We want full involvement from everyone with an interest in the area."

The Masterplan ideas have been put together after the council held consultation exercises.

The latest plans will soon be available to view on Wyre Council's website.
