Seafront change plan welcomed

WE are ready for change! Fleetwood residents have welcomed plans to transform the town's seafront.

Council bosses have unveiled the proposals – the Fleetwood Seafront Masterplan – which would see the Marine Hall overhauled as part of a 2m revamp, a huge wing sculpture created at a bird watching centre at Rossall Point and a newly-built education centre on the Marine Gardens.

Graham Rudd of North Albert Street said: "I bowl at the Marine Gardens and I think it's a good idea.

"The area is looking a bit dowdy but if it has some money spent on it, it will be fine.

"It's like lots of things -– it's past its sell-by date."

Ivy Archer, of Poulton Road, Fleetwood, said: "It does want bringing up to date.

"Give people something to do and it will make the area more attractive."

Don Rance of Northway, added: "It's the Mount Pavilion they want to do something with - it's a disgrace.

"They should do something with it, perhaps put a tea room in there.

"We need something to brighten things up.

"It's time they did something proper - it puts people off when they are on holiday."

Other ideas for the seafront are enhanced picnic areas, a skatepark, a knowledge centre, a revamped Marine Hall to attract conferences and an outdoor performance area by the hall.

A new cafe and entrance would be created at the hall.

The Marine Lake could be re-developed to create a hub for a range of water sports.

These could include rowing, windsurfing, canoeing and pedalos.

And part of an under-used pitch and putt course could be transformed into a skatepark for youngsters.

Coun Marlene Colby, who led a council task group on the seafront, said: "I would like to see something new.

"We have a new generation of children and I think we need something for them and not be selfish and live in the past."
