It was only launched five months ago, but Fylde’s newest adventure scouts has already grown to become one of its largest.

The Explorer Scouts of St Annes, for 14 to 18 year olds, has more than 20 regular members following its first meeting in November, and now they are keen for some funding help so they can buy much-needed adventure equipment.

Chris Jeffrey, who runs the explorer unit, said: “We got some start-up money from the Scouts organisation, but after admin costs and getting the essentials, it hasn’t stretched very far.

“Getting out and about is at the heart of what we do, and the scout ethos is living for adventure, so we really need some camping equipment.

“Other groups have very kindly given us some of their old kit and, while some of it does need fixing, it’s usable for the time being, but we are mostly relying on other people to help us when we are on trips.

“Having our own tents and cooking equipment is really crucial for us.”

Chris has applied on behalf of the Explorer Scouts of St Annes for funds through our Community Giveaway, which we are running in partnership with the Swallowdale Children’s Trust.

We have £10,000 to give to deserving community groups and individuals aged under 25, and have already seen applications from sports groups, youth groups and young
musicians.

Chris said St Annes did have an explorer scouts group up to seven years ago, and since then scouts have graduated to groups in Lytham, Ansdell and Kirkham.

He added: “I took some time out and concentrated on what we should be doing for young people in our area. I found that one in 10 14-year-olds, when they left scouts in St Annes, went on to other
activity groups, and the others weren’t doing anything.

“I decided to resurrect explorer scouts in St Annes and now nine-in-10 scouts stay on and we have become the second biggest group in the area.

“It makes me very proud.”
