Schools enjoy recordbreaking GCSE results

BLACKPOOL schools have enjoyed a record breaking year of GCSE results with all eight high schools achieving their best ever grades.

More pupils than ever before have left school in the resort with five GCSE passes of C and above.

On an individual school level, stories of sparkling success flooded in from every corner of the town.

Five out of eight of the schools saw achievement levels rise by more than 10 per cent in their overall pass rate.

Three schools, Palatine, St Mary's and Beacon Hill saw an even more meteoric rise as results rocketed between 15 and 20 per cent.

The number of pupils achieving at least five passes including maths and English is another triumph with all Blackpool schools driving standards up.

Three schools, St George's, St Mary's and Collegiate saw an improvement of more than 10 per cent.

Youngsters from Collegiate managed an impressive 19 per cent rise in their maths and English results.

St Mary's Catholic College led the celebrations after seeing its percentages for students getting five passes above C or more overall leap to a staggering 99 percent, a 19 per cent rise on 2009.

The increase in the number gaining five passes including maths and English leapt up 10 percentage points to 53.

Stephen Tierney headteacher said: "Some year's you turn a new page in your record books, others you start a new chapter but this group of students have started a totally new book with their outstanding achievements."

Montgomery High School in Bispham also maintained impressive levels of progress.

The overall percentage of pupils leaving with five passes soared to 88 per cent and an impressive 66 per cent of these included English and maths.

Headteacher Simon Brennand, who will be taking over the reigns from Paul Moss in September, said: "We have again built upon the high standards at GCSE.

"70 per cent of students got eight or more A* to C grades.

"There were many superb results across the whole range from students who had worked very hard, to secure their individual success."
