A Blackpool pop star is set to top the charts for the very first time this weekend.

Jake Roche fronts boy band Rixton, which are set to hit number one on Sunday after slotting in at the pinnacle of the official midweek chart update.

Jake, who is the son of Coleen Nolan and actor Shane Richie, lived in the resort between the ages of 10 and 16.

Taking to Twitter to share his excitement at the prospect of being a chart topper, he said: “Number One in the mid week.

“Let’s see if we can hold it. My heart can’t take it!”

Jake, 21, who went to St John Vianney’s and St Mary’s schools and previously played Sunday League football in Blackpool for the Philharmonic and Pump and Truncheon, has come a long way since his time on the Fylde coast.

He has already achieved fame in America with bandmates Charley Bagnall, 28, Lewi Morgan, 26 and Danny Wilkin, 24.

Danny also has Fylde coast links and his parents ran the Bourne Poacher pub in Thornton. He and Jake became firm friends and began writing music together after leaving school. Should they beat competition from former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on Sunday, they will score their first number one in the UK with the single Me and My Broken Heart.

The boys struck lucky after being spotted by Scooter Braun, the man who discovered Justin Bieber.

After seeing Rixton on YouTube, he flew from America, demanded to meet them face-to-face, and offered them a deal there and then.

Speaking to The Gazette at the time, Jake said: “We want to break the UK. But when something like the opportunity of breaking America comes first I think you just have to take it and run.”

Rixton’s single had sold 12,000 more copies than rival Nicole Sherzinger’s ‘Your Love’ in the midweek charts.
