Review of Fylde's speed cameras

A REVIEW of speed cameras has been welcomed in Fylde and Wyre.

Lancashire County Council has announced it will look at every speed camera across the county – and those Gatsos which cannot prove they have had an effect on road safety will be scrapped.

The review will look at accident and casualty figures at speed camera sites.

Peter Gibson, leader of Wyre Council, said: "If it can be proved the cameras help road safety then obviously that is something I support, but if the review shows it is just a cash cow and doesn't affect safety, then it's important to look at whether we want to continue with them.

"This review is overdue to establish whether the cameras are doing their job and which ones are effective. You have to have the evidence to see what the situation is."

County Councillor Tim Ashton, cabinet member for highways at county hall, was the one who demanded the review.

He said: "I want to make sure the cameras are doing the job they're meant to, rather than being there to make money.

"If a camera is proved to be reducing injuries and accidents that is fine, if not then we have got to get rid of it.

"This is not about saving money, it's about making sure the cameras on Lancashire's roads are there for the right reasons.

"I'm asking for all the statistics on every camera and all that evidence will be closely analysed. We will have less cameras after the review."
