Revamped Square lets traffic back

BLACKPOOL'S prestigious new St John's Square was due to re-open to traffic today following the completion of the £4.7m project.

Only buses and hackney cabs are allowed into the area which will operate on a “shared space” basis between pedestrians and vehicles.

Darker strips of granite cobbles signify the road allocated to buses and taxis and these strips have a special textured surface to make them apparent to visually impaired people.

But the council is reviewing traffic and bus routes to see if it can make the square permanently traffic-free in future.

Council leader Peter Callow said: “At the moment we have too many buses at peak times on Corporation Street, Market Street and West Street so to ease that situation as from Monday both buses and hackney cabs will be allowed to travel across the newly created St John’s Square.”

He added: “I sincerely hope that in the very near future buses and taxis will be re-routed so that St John’s would be totally traffic free.”
