Resort's TV station is a step closer

Blackpool is one step nearer securing its own community radio and television channels. The test trialling of Blackpool FM has started on the Grange Park-based City Learning Centre's website – www.blackpoolclccentre.com

“It’s the first step in place for hopefully securing a five year licence at the end of January,” says Blackpool FM controller Matthew Davidge who runs the Blackpool-based Unique Entertainment agency.

“Initially it is a test trial online prior to in January receiving a four week Restricted Service Licence trial run.”

That would hopefully pave the way to being on air full time by the end of January, he said.

“We’ve had the idea for some time but we just didn’t have the premises,” said Matthew.

“Fortunately the City Learning Centre has the space and the facilities for both a community radio and a television set-up.”

Blackpool FM – like its counterparts in Preston and Chorley – would be a community based station mainly staffed by volunteers but with the facility to take advertising revenue.

At the moment the test trial is a two hour presentation on a repeat loop.

“Eventually though we would see ourselves as being a 24 hour operation with a wide variety of programming – from game shows to religion, arts and lots of local chat,” said Matthew.

The station – and TV channel – would give broadcasting and media students the opportunity to practice their craft in a working environment, he added.

“The broadcasting radius of the radio would be restricted to 12 or 15 miles so it would be very much concentrated on the Blackpool community,” he said. “It is something Blackpool has been in need of for a long time.

“Although there will be local news we want it to be happy news.

“No one wants to tune in to doom and gloom all the time.”
